<p>But are there any foods that contain natural compounds to help combat stress? According to Patricia Fitzgerald, a doctor of acupuncture and Oriental medicine, there certainly are.</p>
<p>In the Huffington Post, she detailed seven herbs.</p>
<p>1. Ginseng may promote mental well-being by alleviating mood problems while boosting energy and memory functions.</p>
<p>2. Golden root is known for its potential to sharpen concentration while relieving stress.</p>
<p>3. Holy basil, which is related to sweet basil, may have anti-inflammatory properties. This herb may help with digestive problems, as well.</p>
<p>4. Herbalists believe that ashwagandha has restorative properties for emotional well-being, mental focus and stress management.</p>
<p>5. People who cannot sleep should read up on he shou wu, which is known for helping insomniacs and boosting learning functions.</p>
<p>6. Schizandra berry may relieve anxiety and increase mental clarity.</p>
<p>7. Individuals with high blood pressure may be interested in reishi mushrooms.</p>
<p>Because some of these herbs can interact with medications, consumers should consult a medical professional before using them, Fitzgerald said.</p>

If this problem persists into adulthood, it can compound the risk for poor heart health, diabetes and other illnesses. Good health habits that include sufficient amounts of exercise could help prevent many of these issues.</p>
<p>However, a new report from the Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association (SGMA) suggests that New Mexico has one of the least physically active populations in the country, as reported by Athletic Business Newswire.</p>
<p>How can the state fix this problem? With the help of New Mexico yoga classes, of course! This mind-body regimen can not only help practitioners manage stress, but it also improves body composition, muscle relaxation, flexibility, heart rate and lung capacity.</p>
<p>In fact, the rest of the U.S. seems to be catching on. The same report from the SGMA found that the two most popular group fitness classes were stationary cycling and yoga.</p>
<p>Learning these good health habits early on can benefit children in the long run. Not only does physical activity help kids improve their overall health today, but it increases the likelihood that they will want to keep exercising as adults.</p>

<p>Scientists believe that there are two forms of attention: exteroception, which concerns the outside world, and interoception, which looks at our inner world, including emotions and thoughts.</p>
<p>One experiment demonstrated that different parts of the brain govern these two modes of attention. This information can be valuable to individuals who are dealing with mental stress because certain activities can improve interoception by boosting mind-body awareness, according to Scientific American. These activities include yoga and meditation.</p>
<p>Several researchers are studying this principle among patients who have conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder. Although interoception forces them to confront disturbing thoughts and feelings, this is a healthier way of dealing with these issues than distracting oneself with alcohol or drugs.</p>
<p>Santa Fe yoga classes teach many of these meditative exercises. Not only can students improve their ability to turn inward and pay attention to their emotional needs, but they can also enjoy the finer things in life.</p>

Either they have preconceived notions of the activity as one that is geared toward women, or they discovered that they may not be as flexible as they think they need to be. However, neither one of these assumptions is helpful, nor should they prevent men from learning good health habits from yoga.</p>
<p>One group of practitioners is trying to start a movement to bring more men into the community by designing &quot;broga&quot; classes that include settings that may make them feel more at home, such as instructions in layperson&#039;s language and the music of Radiohead and Bob Dylan. Though the classes are designed for men, all are welcome.</p>
<p>&quot;On the one hand, we don&#039;t take ourselves too seriously. But broga is a real thing with real integrity,&quot; instructor Adam O&#039;Neill told MSNBC.</p>
<p>The exercises in these classes focus on balance, strength and awareness of breath. Increased flexibility is considered a side benefit.</p>
<p>Instructor Matt Carpenter told the news source that men may have unique attributes that can enhance the yoga experience, including discipline and quiet mindfulness.</p>
<p>While it&#039;s great that men may have a place to feel at home, practitioners who would rather join a more diverse community should consider visiting a local Dahn Yoga health center.</p>

In fact, many practitioners are constantly looking for good healthy foods to support their well-being.</p>
<p>Yoga enthusiast and associate nutrition editor for EatingWell Magazine Kerri-Ann Jennings, M.S., R.D., discussed several foods that can help sharpen mental focus, as reported by The Huffington Post:</p>
<p>1. Leafy greens &#8211; A past study suggested that individuals who ate at least two servings of green, leafy vegetables had the same level of mental focus as people who were five years younger than them.</p>
<p>2. Whole grains &#8211; Compared to refined, bleached or processed foods, whole grains provide a more sustainable, longer-lasting source of carbohydrates, which is good news for the brain.</p>
<p>3. Coffee &#8211; It may obvious that caffeine would provide a mental kick, but these effects are different between men and women. While caffeine may have a stronger impact on males, females may be benefiting from a placebo effect, as demonstrated by their occasional alertness after drinking decaf. Just be careful about adding extra sugar and fat!</p>

Adequate amounts of exercise can support the cardiovascular system, strengthen the muscles, keep the brain sharp and optimize metabolism. However, physical fitness is just one aspect of overall well-being. Good healthy foods are essential, too!</p>
<p>Generally, the best types of food to eat are fresh, non-processed fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean meat and low-fat dairy. However, some fitness experts point out that because of the different physical demands of various exercise regimens, the diet that would best suit an individual may hinge on their routines.</p>
<p>So what should yoga practitioners eat?</p>
<p>&quot;For a meditative class, the kind of food you want is calming and cooling, so that would be a lot of fresh, lightly cooked vegetables,&quot; instructor Nikola Ellis told Body and Soul. &quot;Avoid things like animal protein. But if you were doing a strong physical practice, you&#039;re likely to require a bit more protein because you&#039;re building that muscle mass and you need carbs for energy.&quot;</p>
<p>Furthermore, it may be a good idea not to eat within two to three hours before taking New Mexico yoga classes so as not to experience discomfort amid all the twists and stretches. Unprocessed food is best because these products are less likely to drain the body&#039;s energy.</p>

However, if they are too vigorous, they may make a few amateur errors. One potential side effect of improper technique is a mad head rush, which can lead to balance problems, neck pain and headaches.</p>
<p>Fortunately, enthusiast Jeanne Rose offered four tips to prevent head rushes during New Mexico yoga classes, as published by Yahoo! Sports:</p>
<p>1. Instead of eating a few large meals in a day, eat between four and six smaller meals. This will keep blood sugar levels regular and, with the right amount of sodium, maintain blood pressure. Try eating one small meal an hour before yoga.</p>
<p>2. When transitioning between poses, stand up slowly. Getting up too quickly can cause a sudden drop in blood pressure, loss of balance and a risk of falling down.</p>
<p>3. Take deep breaths. Shallow breathing will deprive the brain of oxygen and cause you to feel lightheaded. Deep breathing is especially important during exercise.</p>
<p>4. As with any physical activity, proper hydration is essential. Water can help before, during and after yoga. For extra electrolytes to help maintain blood pressure, try sports drinks.</p>

One of the tenets for good health for the heart is exercise. Thankfully, yoga provides a fantastic regimen!</p>
<p>Yoga therapist Elaine Gavalas wrote in the Huffington Post about five potential heart health benefits of yoga:</p>
<p>1. One study suggested that yoga may reduce the likelihood of a heart attack. Heart disease patients were divided into two groups: while both took hypertension medication, one also went through yoga training. The latter group was 47 percent less likely to have a heart attack.</p>
<p>2. Heart rate variability as a response to the autonomic nervous system is an indicator of heart health &#8211; the higher the variability, the fitter the heart is. People who practice yoga were found to have better heart rate variability in one study.</p>
<p>3. Yoga enthusiasts may have lower blood pressure.</p>
<p>4. Patients with atrial fibrillation may reduce the number of heart episodes by one-half after taking up yoga. They may also become less depressed and anxious.</p>
<p>5. Another study among heart failure patients found that those who practiced yoga may improve their aerobic capacity by 22 percent.</p>

Although the bodies of male and female athletes are fundamentally different, one aerobics instructor believes that yoga can teach good health habits to both groups.</p>
<p>&quot;Almost all people have some idea that yoga is a good activity to perform on a regular basis, but some people, especially athletes, are not exactly sure of the many benefits yoga has to offer,&quot; Heather Johnson-Emerson wrote in Yahoo! Sports.</p>
<p>Specifically, she detailed five different effects.</p>
<p>1. Yoga can strengthen the muscles, including the quads, hamstrings, back and abs.</p>
<p>2. Yoga breathing, relaxation and meditation can all lower blood pressure and improve stress management, therefore supporting heart health.</p>
<p>3. Increased flexibility can decrease pain during physical activity.</p>
<p>4. Yoga can boost libido.</p>
<p>5. The mind-body regimen can improve one&#039;s mood and disposition. These effects can be further augmented with the help of aromatherapy, Johnson-Emerson wrote.</p>
<p>Athletes who want to learn more should check out their local New Mexico yoga classes. They&#039;d certainly be in good company. According to a survey published in the Yoga Journal, 15.8 million Americans were practicing the holistic healing technique as of 2008. Nearly 28 percent were men.</p>

However, yoga taught her many valuable lessons, which helped make a good healthy life more achievable.</p>
<p>&quot;The practice of self-love is just that &#8211; it&#039;s a practice,&quot; said Sell, as quoted by The Breeze. &quot;Like in yoga, we learn that if we keep doing those same things, we get better at it.&quot;</p>
<p>Dahn yoga health courses can provide a safe environment to learn these skills.</p>
<p>Sell addressed a group of sorority sisters as part of National Eating Disorder Awareness Month. She let them know that eating disorders are usually a symptom of a deeper problem, and proceeded to share stories about her struggles with obesity and surviving a sexual assault at the hands of an acquaintance as a child.</p>
<p>One student told the news source that a lot of different stressors can trigger an eating disorder, and that it&#039;s important for people to recognize potential signs in a loved one.</p>
<p>According to the National Institute of Mental Health, anorexia nervosa can affect 0.9 percent of women and 0.3 percent of men during a lifetime. Bulimia may strike 1.5 percent of women and 0.5 percent of men. About 3.5 percent of women and 2 percent of men become binge eaters.</p>
<p>Professional help can set people back on the right track, Sell said.</p>
